This 1963 Ferrari 250 GTE is one of 954 Pininfarina-bodied 2+2 coupes built during three years of production and is one of approximately 300 Series III examples manufactured during the model’s final year. Chassis 4783 is believed to have been initially delivered in Europe before being brought to the US in the late 1960s. It reportedly remained under the care of a single family from the early 1970s through 2014, when it was purchased by the current owner as a project. The car was subsequently disassembled, and the bodywork was repaired prior to the application of gray primer. The 3.0-liter Colombo V12 and four-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive were overhauled, although the drivetrain remains uninstalled. Retained equipment includes triple Weber carburetors, 15″ Borrani wheels, brake and suspension parts, a rear axle assembly, exterior trim, Veglia gauges, and interior components upholstered in black leather. This non-running Series III 250 GTE project is now offered on dealer consignment in Southampton, New York, with spare and removed parts, partial service records, a service handbook, and a clean Montana title.
Introduced at the 1960 Paris Motor Show, the 250 GTE was the first Ferrari model designed with standard rear seating. It carried over a modified version of the 2,600mm-wheelbase 508 chassis used in previous 250 variants, with the engine moved forward to accommodate rear seats. Changes to the Pininfarina styling introduced for third-series cars include thicker chrome headlight bezels, driving lights mounted outward of the grille, revised rear fender profiles, and single-piece taillights.
Bodywork combines steel construction with aluminum hood and trunk panels, and this example was stripped and disassembled in the mid-2010s. The car received bodywork prior to being finished in gray primer.
The removed brightwork, bumpers, running lights, side windows, and additional exterior components included in the sale are shown in the gallery.
A selection of removed brake and suspension components will accompany the project along with a set of four 15″ Borrani wire wheels. The included brake booster was rebuilt in 2015.
Seats and other trim upholstered in black are depicted in the gallery, as are Veglia gauges and other interior components.
The 3.0-liter Tipo 128 F V12 features an aluminum block and cylinder heads with a single overhead camshaft per bank, spark plugs situated in the outer side of each bank, and coil valve springs. The engine was reportedly rebuilt since 2014, and the starter, alternator, radiator, heater core, and fuel tank were overhauled in 2015. Additional retained equipment includes three downdraft Weber carburetors with individual intake ports, dual distributors and spin-on oil filters, black crinkle-finish Ferrari valve covers, exhaust manifolds, ignition wires, and a three-blade fan.
The accompanying four-speed manual gearbox has overdrive and was rebuilt in 2015 by Auto Turismo Sport LTD of New Milford, Connecticut. An exhaust system is not included in the sale.
