This 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS is documented as being one of the first Ferrari 308s featured on the Magnum P.I. television show that aired on CBS from 1980 to 1988. It is finished in red over Nero leather and is powered by a 2.9-liter quad-cam V8 linked with a five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes electronic ignition, four Weber carburetors, a quad-exit exhaust system, four-wheel disc brakes, 390mm Cromodora alloy wheels, a removable roof panel, pop-up headlights, air conditioning, a gated shifter, power windows, and a CD stereo. Acquired by the current owner in 2014, this Magnum P.I. 308 GTS shows 93k miles and is offered on dealer consignment in Delaware with supporting documentation and a clean New Jersey title.
Several Ferrari 308s and fiberglass mock-ups on Pontiac Fiero chassis were used during the production of the eight seasons of Magnum P.I. This example is said to have been featured in the first season of the show. It left the factory finished in Fly Yellow and was refinished in red in preparation for filming. Exterior details include a black removable roof panel, pop-up headlights, Scuderia Ferrari fender shields, dual side mirrors, a vented decklid, and quad exhaust outlets.
Silver-finished 390mm Cromodora alloy wheels are mounted with 220/55 Michelin TRX tires. The car features a fully independent suspension with double wishbones front and rear, and stopping power is provided by a ventilated disc at each corner.
The bolstered bucket seats are trimmed in Nero leather that extends to the door panels. The driver seat was previously modified to accommodate Tom Sellek’s height and has since been returned to factory specifications. Appointments include air conditioning, power windows, a Bluetooth-capable Dual CD stereo, and a gated shifter with a dogleg gear pattern. A crack is visible on the dashboard and Dynamat insulation is applied to the spare tire well near the radiator.
The leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel fronts Veglia instrumentation including a 180-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 7,700-rpm redline, an analog clock, and gauges for oil temperature, fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 93k miles, approximately 10k of which were added under current ownership.
The mid-mounted 2.9L quad-cam V8 was factory rated at 237 horsepower and features electronic ignition and four twin-choke Weber 40DCNF carburetors. An oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. The exhaust is covered by an aftermarket black perforated shield.
Documentation outlining the Ferrari 308 serial numbers used during the production of Magnum P.I. will accompany the car.
