Euro 1984 Ferrari 400i

This 1984 Ferrari 400i is a left-hand-drive, European-market model that was imported to the US and Federalized in early 1985, and it has resided in California since September 1991. It spent 27 years with a single owner prior to its acquisition by the seller in September 2022. Powered by a fuel-injected 4.8-liter Colombo quad-cam V12 linked with a three-speed automatic transmission, the car has 415mm wheels, independent suspension, a Blaupunkt radio, and air conditioning. This 400i is now offered by the seller, BaT Local Partner, on behalf of the owner with the owner’s manual, service records, spare parts, a damage-free Carfax report, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.

Unveiled at the 1972 Paris Motor Show as the successor to the 365 GTC/4, the 365 GT4 2+2 featured bodywork by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina and was built through 1976, when it was replaced by the updated 400 model. The cars were not officially offered in the US, though some were imported and federalized in-period via the gray market.

The Pininfarina-designed bodywork is finished in Nero (1240), and headlight modifications were performed in 1997. The integrated fog lamps have been wired to work independently of the headlights. Close-up photographs of the exterior finish and trim are shown in the gallery below.

The 415mm Cromodora alloy wheels are mounted with Michelin TRX tires, and a spare tire is located in the trunk. The car features an independent front and rear suspension, and stopping power is provided by discs at all four corners.

The front bucket and individual rear seats are upholstered in Nero Connolly leather and are accented by a color-coordinated dashboard and door panels. Interior amenities include a central rear armrest, power windows, a Blaupunkt radio, and air conditioning. The dashboard and console were re-dyed in the 1990s, the headliner was replaced circa 2006, and the signal stalk was replaced in 2017.

The 300-km/h speedometer is a replacement that was installed circa 2019 along with a replacement tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 1,500km (~982 miles), and another 31k miles are shown on the removed, mph-based speedometer that is included in the sale. Total chassis mileage is unknown. 

The 4.8-liter F101 Colombo quad-cam V12 is equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and it was provided with revised emissions equipment in September 1991 in order to comply with California requirements. A label from the Bureau of Automotive Repair can be seen in the gallery below along with a related invoice, and the car most recently passed a California emissions inspection in August 1993. However, the car was unable to complete an attempted emissions inspection in preparation for the sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. A leak is noted from the transmission.

The chassis number, 52847, is shown on the steering column above. The VIN sequence is listed as ZFFEB06B000052847 on the California title, and the Bureau of Automotive Repair label carries the truncated sequence B06B000052847. The Eurocar Imports doorjamb label also lists the VIN as ZFFEB06B000052847, though there is a stray mark after the first ‘B.’

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned mileage inconsistency.

The car is currently registered as Planned Non Operation in the State of California, and it cannot pass a smog test, so it cannot be sold to an in-state private-party buyer.
