This 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is said to have been delivered new to Chinetti Motors in the US and received a color change to red before making its way to Southern California in the late 1970s. After spending time on the East Coast, in the mid-1990s chassis 14237 returned to California, where it changed hands in 2005 and again in 2010. The car subsequently underwent a refresh that included fuel system repairs, an engine reseal, and a re-trim of the interior before being purchased by the seller in 2012. Power is provided by a 4.4-liter Colombo V12 that breathes through six Weber carburetors and is paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Additional features include servo-assisted ventilated disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension, electric power steering, 15” Borrani wire wheels, black and red leather interior upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, and a Becker Mexico cassette radio. This Daytona has received Platinum Awards at various Ferrari Club of America events between 2011 and 2022 and is now offered with owner’s manuals, service records, and a clean California title in the name of the seller’s trust.
The 365 GTB/4 debuted at the 1968 Paris Auto Salon with styling penned by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti featuring a raked fastback profile and a Kamm tail. Scaglietti-built bodywork incorporates a steel shell with aluminum hood, trunk, and door panels riding on a steel-tube chassis with a fiberglass inner tub. To comply with US safety standards, pop-up headlights were integrated into the nose panel in 1971 in lieu of the model’s earlier covered-headlight design.
This example is said to have left the factory finished in light blue and was repainted in its current shade of red early in its life. Features include split chrome bumpers, a driver-side mirror, an antenna, amber front turn signals with prancing-horse logos, rectangular rear side markers, and quad ANSA exhaust outlets. Repairs to the headlight wiring were performed in 2022.
Borrani wire wheels were refurbished by Valley Wire Wheel Service in Van Nuys, California, in 2012 along with their octagonal knock-offs and are wrapped in 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX tires, as is a matching spare housed in the trunk. The seller states that the tires are in need of replacement. Servo-assisted braking is handled by ventilated discs at each corner, and electric power steering was added during a 2022 service by Bobileff Motorcar Company in San Diego. The brake system was refreshed during the 2010-2011 work by Enzo Motors in Anaheim, California, and the master cylinder was rebuilt in 2012.
The cabin was re-trimmed prior to the seller’s purchase in black leather with contrasting red inserts over the seats and door panels. Features include black carpeting, black “mouse fur” dash trim, a fluted headliner, a gated shifter, shoulder belts, rear luggage straps, air conditioning, power windows, and a Becker Mexico cassette stereo. The air conditioning was charged in 2022. The passenger-side quarter-window vent latch is loose.
The three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 180-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel level, coolant temperature, amperage, oil temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 61k miles, approximately 2,800 of which have been added under current ownership.
The 4.4-liter Tipo 251 Colombo V12 features a 60° bank angle, dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank, a dry-sump lubrication system, and six Weber carburetors. An oil change was performed in 2022. Service performed by Enzo Motors prior to the seller’s purchase included replacement of the engine seals as well as reconditioning of the fuel tanks, replacement of the fuel lines and ignition components, and rebuilds of the carburetors and generator.
The all-synchromesh five-speed manual transaxle is mounted at the rear of the car to optimize weight distribution and incorporates a limited-slip differential. The four-wheel independent suspension comprises unequal A-arms, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars at each end.
A spare set of five Cromodora alloy wheels with four three-eared knock-offs is included in the sale, as are a set of owner’s manuals and a tool kit. Awards garnered by the car between 2011 and 2022 are shown in the photo gallery below but are not included in the sale.
